This Burgess, VA homeowner wanted to “Super-insulate” their attic with blown-in insulation. They wanted to make their home more comfortable and more energy-efficient. There were rooms in the home that were too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, and it seemed like they could never get the temperature under control.
At our inspection, we found that the attic was currently insulated with fiberglass insulation on the ceiling. Wires, plumbing lines, and other utility lines ran through the attic, leaving gaps in the insulation and allowing conditioned air to escape. There was also plywood decking to allow for the attic space to be used for storage, that the homeowner wanted to keep and continue to utilize their storage space.
To achieve the homeowner’s goal of making the rooms in their home more comfortable, and reducing their energy bills, we proposed air sealing and insulating the attic. First, we would install Rockwool can light covers over all the recessed lights in the attic and seal them. Then we would seal all electrical, plumbing, and other utility penetrations to reduce air loss via the stack effect. We then recommend adding blown-in cellulose insulation over the existing fiberglass insulation, installing PVs to prevent drifting of the insulation due to the soffit vents. We would also install a dam around the pull-down attic stairs to prevent insulation from falling out.
This approach will reduce the conditioned air loss from the living space to the unconditioned attic. This solution will also combat heat radiating into the rooms below the attic making them too hot and hard to cool down. Reducing the loss of conditioned air and heat transfer will result in the HVAC system running less often, reducing wear and tear on the unit, and saving on energy bills.
