The inspection
Part of the attic has some decking and old fiberglass batt insulation barely fills the cavities between the floor joists.
Chimney & Air Loss
Chimneys are a major source of air loss for homes contributing to drafts, high energy bills, and conditioned air loss.
Air Sealing
After removing the old batt insulation, all top plates and utility penetrations are sealed with spray foam to reduce the conditioned air loss from the living space to the attic.
Proper Vents (PVs)
PVs, the gray/silver rectangles between the rafters are used with blockers to keep insulation from falling on top of the soffit vent while still providing proper ventilation to the roof.
Cellulose Insulation
Blown-in cellulose insulation is installed, you can see the PVs poking out of the top of the insulation, keeping the cellulose from getting down to the soffit.
Chimney Sealing
To seal the chimney, metal flashing, fire caulk and rockwool are used to separate the insulation from the chimney. This allows the new insulation to be installed without risk of the heat of the chimney impacting the insulation.
David Lewis Pull Down Stair Cover
The Silver box you see above the pull down stairs is called a David Lewis Hatch Cover. This is a light weight, insulated cover that reduces the heat and air loss around your attic's pull down stairs.
