Foamax on Foundation Walls
The foundation walls of this crawl space in Surry, VA were made with porous cinderblock walls. Moisture and air from the outside were able to leak in, adding to the relative humidity. We covered the open vents within these walls with precisely cut foamboard and sealed them with can spray foam. The walls themselves were covered with Foamax foamboards that were mechanically fastened. These boards, at 1½ inches thick, will act as an air barrier and vapor retarder and will help prevent any outside influence from seeping into the crawl space.
CleanSpace Vapor Barrier
The crawl space floor of this crawl space has been covered with 20-mil CleanSpace, which is a heavy-duty vapor barrier, designed to protect the crawl space from the earth's moisture. The liner was wrapped and sealed around all piers and attached to the foundation walls. An antimicrobial called UltraFresh was made within the material, which will prevent mold and mildew from growing on the liner itself. With this vapor barrier in place, the crawl space is cleaner and dryer, and the environment and relative humidity are easier to monitor and control.
Friction Fit Door
The crawl space entrance is also a hotspot for outside air and moisture to leak in. The wooden or metal doors that are often used to cover this entrance become warped and damaged over time from the weather and outside conditions. We make a custom friction fit door that sits behind the exterior crawl space door, which helps to seal off the outside influence. With this door, as well as a full-encapsulation, the crawl space environment is easier to regulate, and the prevention of high relative humidity is more manageable.
