Waterproofing a Toano, VA Basement
Challenge
This Toano, VA homeowner has a partially finished basement but has battled some water infiltration into the space. They've been using a sump pump and dehumidifier to try and combat the moisture, but it hasn't been doing the job.
The walls currently have vinyl-faced fiberglass attached to them that we will need to work around in order to install a waterproofing system. They'd like a system that allows them to use the space without worrying about their belongings being damaged or having to battle mold, mildew, or musty odors.
Solution
Our team started by removing some of the insulation along the bottom perimeter of the basement to allow them access to the workspace. Next, they cut the perimeter of the slab to create a trench where the drainage system will be installed.
CleanSpace, a heavy-duty vapor barrier is installed on the basement walls about 6 inches above outside grade. This will direct any water that seeps through the foundation wall, down into the drainage system.
WaterGuard drainage track, a french drain system, is installed in the trench along with drainage rock and the slab is replaced overtop of the system. The WaterGuard system collects infiltrating water and directs it to a new SuperSump Plus sump pump system with UltraSump Battery Back up.
The SuperSump system consists of a basin with an airtight lid, inside a 1/3hp pump sits atop a clean pump stand keeping it out of silt and sediment to help prevent clogging. Alongside it, is the UltraSump, a battery backup system that takes over in case the power or main pump fails. This gives our homeowners the peace of mind that their finished space and their belongings will be protected. Finally, we'll replace the vinyl-faced fiberglass insulation initially removed from the walls.
